Import Collections

Walkthrough

As Movies runs on an iPhone or iPad (which is limited in raw processing power), importing movie collections is currently non-trivial.

For Extreme Movie Manager, the process is fairly simple: in EMM, just export your collection to iPhone and upload the created ZIP file as stated below from point #6.

For the other desktop movie catalogs, we convert their format into the Movies XML format and upload that newly created file in a ZIP container to Movies. That's the bottomline, here comes the details.

  1. In your desktop movie catalog, choose to export your catalog to XML
    • In Delicious Library, export to Delicious Library 1 and use that XML file!
  2. Browse to our conversion page and upload the XML from your desktop movie catalog. Make sure to select the correct application name on our conversion page.
  3. Save the newly created XML file in a folder.
  4. [optional] Copy the cover pictures from your movie catalog into the same folder
  5. ZIP the content of the folder with the XML file and the [optional] cover pictures and name this ZIP file export.zip. Make sure to ZIP the content of the folder, and not the folder itself. Movies cannot handle ZIP files with folder structures.
  6. Do NOT use WinZIP is their ZIP file cannot be handled by Movies. Use the compression feature within MacOSX or Windows (by selecting all files you want to ZIP, rightclick and select "Compress xxx files" (Mac) or "Send to > Compress folder" (Windows)).
  7. Now follow the procedure to restore a backup for Movies for iPhone or restore a backup for Movies HD (as this export.zip is now actually a real Movies backup file).

myGames

myGames is a game catalog application with stunning graphics. It allows you to quickly add, find and view games in your library (with the ability to add new games by seeking by title using amazon.com - so all game details are filled in for you!). It also allows to lend games to friends, so you can easily keep track of who you gave that copy of "Unreal Tournament" to.

The game list has 3 visualisation options, "Wood", "Charcoal" and "Metal" which makes browsing your game list a pleasure for the eye.

There is also a wish-list which you can use to store game titles you want to buy in the future. As soon as you bought the game, you move it with a single tap to your game library.

Features

  • Fully customizable game catalog
  • Games are shown using their cover (and optionally their title)
  • Sort by name, platform, release year and rating
  • Quickfind by title
  • amazon.com integration (requires network)
  • Lend games to friends
  • Wishlist!

After startup your game catalog is shown. You can browse through them using the standard scrolling mechanism.

myGames_edit_w.jpg

When you tap on a game, you get the detailed game page. In this view you can modify the fields by tapping on them. When you're done, you should tap the "Done" button on the top. When you tap the Amazon button, the browser will launch with the Amazon url, so you can get even more game details - or buy it online! If you doubletap a game in the game list, you can quickly lend the game to a friend!

myGames_add_w.jpg

To add a new game, tap the add icon on top of the main screen. It will ask you whether you want to manually add a new game, or try to find it by title using the Amazon games database. The above screen shows the results after searching for "tournament" in Amazon. When you found the game you were looking for, tap the title and you are presented with the standard game editor view. When you finished editing, tap "Done".

myGames_quickfind_w.jpg

In the main screen you can quickfind games too. Push the search icon on top of the screen, and a searchbar will popup. Start typing some letters of the title (or platform, ...) of the game you are looking for, and it will filter your game catalog in realtime. When you found the game, you tap to view it, or press the "Cancel" button to cancel your search and return to the standard view.

myGames_settings_w.jpg

The settings page allows you to enable the title label (this shows the title of the book just below the cover image and might be handy of lots of covers in your collection look the same).
You can change the game ordering (either by title, genre or rating) to satisfy your own needs.
Finally, you can switch between 3 views: Wood, Metal and Charcoal.

Movies - backup & restore (Movies 1.5 and lower)

Movies integrates with SyncDocs in order to provide an out-of-the-box backup & restore procedure. By making a backup and populating the database yourself, you can import any movie collection you already have!

Backup

  1. Download the SyncDocs Client on your desktop computer (either Mac or Windows) and start it.
    syncdocs.jpg
  2. Now go to the settings screen of Movies and tap the backup button. It will show a Bonjour browser and if your iPhone is connected to the same network as your desktop computer, you should see 1 entry listed, SyncDocs.

  3. Tap on the SyncDocs entry and the backup process will start.
    syncdocs_backup.png
As soon as it's finished (this can take a while if you have lots of movies), it will shows a message stating how many files it backed up.

Restore

  1. Start the SyncDocs client on your desktop computer (either Mac or Windows). Don't touch anything.
    syncdocs.jpg
  2. Now go to the settings screen of Movies and tap the Restore button. It will show a Bonjour browser and if your iPhone is connected to the same network as your desktop computer, you should see 1 entry listed, SyncDocs. syncdocs_iphone.png
  3. Tap on the entry and then tap the backup you wish to restore. Hold your breath as the backup is getting restored. This may take a while if you have a big backup.

Technical

Currently, Movies exports its raw data. Movies uses an sqlite database, and stores the covers as JPG images on disk. SO if you're making a backup of your movie collection with 55 movies, SyncDocs will download 56 files (1 sqlite database and 55 covers).

If you wish to import your own movie library into Movies , you can make a backup of your (empty) Movies database using the approach described above. Once that's finished, you can browse the downloads folder in the SyncDocs folder on your desktop and locate the icollector.sqlite database file. You can now populate this database using your preferred sqlite client and provide cover thumbnails (where the name of the thumbnail should be the id of the entry in the sqlite database).

In a later version of Movies, we will provide movie imports of popular movie collection applications on the desktop (like Delicious Library, All My Movies, Collectorz, ...).

Finger Twister

Ever played Twister(r) with your kids or friends (you know, using hands and feet - trying to place them onto colored balls on a map on the floor)?

01-splash.jpg

Well, Finger Twister is very much alike, except for the fact you play it on the iPhone, and must use your fingers to cover the colored balls. You can play it in single or two player mode (you should give it a try with that gorgeous girl next to you on the bus stop!) and is very addicting, really!

02-first_finger.jpg

When a spot appears, touch and hold until it disappears...and keep extra fingers at the ready! Or get your fingers intertwined in two player mode...

In the settings screen, you can disable the sound effects.

Done

Done - the To Do list for the rest of us

When Apple introduced the iPhone many people thought the lack of a built-in To Do list was a glaring omission. Since then various contenders have stepped up to the challenge and tried to fill the gap but, we’ve always felt, with limited success. Some are too simple, some too difficult and some just plain ugly.

Done!
