Hello all,

I too have had major problems with the latest version, 2.3.1, of Movies. It turns out we have a basic failure to communicate because I found the answer buried in the support blogs. The software works just fine but as of this writing this web site hasn't been updated to properly explain the new method for backing up and importing. As I see it, there are four problems at work at the same time: iTunes has new functionality, the author of this app has taken advantage of that new functionality and removed old functionality without telling us, the author of this app has failed to remove or change legacy screens from the app, and the author has failed to explain any of this. Therefore I shall try to do here because I like this app and I believe it is worthy of much higher ratings than it is getting on iTunes as of this date.

Problem 1: New iTunes functionality
Apple has added the ability to load user defined data into an app that is built to allow this function. With your iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad connected to your computer, open iTunes and select your iDevice per the normal update/sync method. Find and click on the "Apps" tab at the top of the iTunes window. You should see the text "Sync Apps" with a check box to the immediate left. Toward the bottom of the iTunes window there is an area called "File Sharing". It is probable that you will have to scroll down in iTunes to see this area of the window. Under the "File Sharing" label you should see a list of apps on the left that you can load data into or export data out of. This is where you load or save export.zip. To the right of any apps listed is an area for app specific files that already exist. If Movies has no files listed, export.zip and tmp are possible, then you don't have a backup of the database on you iDevice. If you do see export.zip then you either have created a backup or you loaded one.

Problem 2: New Movies functionality
With the ability of iTunes to load data directly into an app's sandbox, there are new possibilities for app makers to import data that are format independent. iTunes doesn't care what data it loads or saves from an app, you can select any file on your computer and add it to an app; it is up to the app to be able to read the data you load into it. The author of Movies has elected to use the universal .zip format and not confuse us all with the easily modified .xml data that the .zip file really holds. One must have the proper tools and skills to mess up export.zip. With this understanding I can see that the author has done us all a favor by eliminating the need for WiFi, the hassle of having to startup a web server and using a browser to load or save export.zip. This really is a good thing. The problem is that it hasn't been properly documented in a convenient place for us all. See problem 4 below.

Problem 3: Existing (and confusing) commands in Settings
The author of Movies should have changed the screens in the app when new functionality was introduced and old functionality was discarded. This would have alerted us that something new has happened. The whole web server process is gone in version 2.3.1 of Movies. All documentation describing the http process, port 8080 and so on is history. v2.3.1 uses the iTunes method to save and restore the file and it is the web site admins fault for not updating this new process in a clearer way. The problem is that the existing commands under Settings work just fine so, technically, no screen changes were required. The real issue here is that the author apparently doesn't have much experience with human/machine interface guidelines. (Google HMI for a waste of several hours or just read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_machine_interface.) Here's what is actually going on:
- Backup creates a new export.zip file and puts it in a data storage area of Movies where iTunes can find it.
- Restore unzips the export.zip file it finds in the data storage area of Movies. If you restore from your last Backup you are simply unzipping the export.zip you just made so no changes will be seen. It is up to you to save and load export.zip via iTunes. As a programmer myself I don't see how the author could better automate this process except to find a way for the normal sync process to do the backing up of the data but here too choices have to be made. Let's say your computer crashes at the same time as your iDevice breaks? The way things are now you could back up to other than your boot disk and, hopefully, when you get your computer working again and have replaced your iDevice you will still have all your data. You do backups to an external hard disk, right?

Problem 4: Failure to update this web site
This is one problem I can't fix but, hopefully, this post fixes what can be fixed. This is a very good app and I hope the majority of you find these words helpful.

To summarize:
To import a export.zip file from your computer to your iDevice, just click once on the Movies icon in iTunes/iDevice/Apps/File Sharing then click the Add button in the lower right. Navigate to wherever you keep your backed up copy of export.zip and select it. The file should appear in the iTunes window. Doing so may autostart the sync process. If it doesn't autostart then start it yourself by clicking the Sync button. To back up your iDevice just click on Movies in Tunes/iDevice/Apps/File Sharing, click on export.zip, then click on the "Save to.." button. Select a place on your computer that is convenient to you.

In my case I have 758 movies saved in the version of export.zip file that I had exported with the old http server functionality in Movies. I just loaded that file into iTunes as described above and as soon as I did so my iPhone began the sync process. As soon as that was done I opened Movies, went to Settings and tapped on Restore and, bingo!, the import process began. Many minutes later, after Movies had digested the 210MB export.zip file all my movies and TV shows appeared. I think I had something like eight movies in my wish list but either the import didn't work for them or they are not in the version of export.zip I have. The latter is more likely. This could very well be my fault as I know I actually had over 800 movies before this version of Movies came out and didn't realize I needed to do a backup.

Remember, iTunes will NOT automatically backup the Movies database. You MUST back it up yourself. I recommend doing a backup every time you make enough changes that doing them again is a hassle. Perhaps the author will figure out how to make iTunes back this stuff up automatically someday.

I just installed the newest version of Movies. I made a backup (export.zip) prior to the installation. How do I restore my backup to the new version? Every time I tapped restore it did nothing.

So I added a movie to the database and did a backup. It appeared to store it somewhere. I deleted the movie and tried to restore it and it imported four copies of the movie.

Okay what's going on? This app worked great until the new version. I got a database of nearly five hundred movies and no way to get them back into the data base. Any help will be appreciated from anyone!!!!!!

I recently finished adding 568 movies that i watched and changed their covers and organized them. Then 2 days ago I updated to latest version and it didn't open anymore. Then I had to delete it and reinstall it. Now it works but all the data is lost. I wasted all that time for nothing! Yes, I am mad and it sucks! I am very disappointed.

The backup procedure in 2.3 seems to work through iTunes. The movies web server does not come up anymore. While I can import the .ZIP with iTunes it does not import anything - even after more than 2h wait!

Is anyone else having the same problem as me?

Here's what happens... when I do the "backup" option, the export.zip file not only generates, I see it downloading to me downloads folder, via the "downloads window" in Safari. GREAT! Cool!

The problem is, then Stuffit (or some other problem on the MAC) must grab it and decompress it into a EXPORT folder. Oh, the folder has everything needed for the restore process, but the problem is, the RESTORE option is looking for the "export.zip" file - the original file it downloaded which no longer exists, thanks to the "unzipping" process once it downloads.

Where is the 'export.zip" file? If there a way to go get it prior to "unzipping"? Like I said, you can see "export.zip in the downloads window in Safari, but as soon as it downloads, instantly it unzips and creates the folder.

Any suggestions? I can't get the creators to write back to any of my "3" different contact submission attempts, so I guess we're(the buyers of this program) are here on our own on this and everything else since they won't respond.

I currently have CLZ Movies and am tired of not being able to scan or have wish lists.
I purchased your app, installed and followed the instructions to export a .xml file from CLz Movies.
I then uploaded to your converter and converted file to a new .xml file.
Following your instructions, I attempted to restore and no restore option is ever displayed on my web browser.
Once I select the path of the saved file and select submit, with iPhone 4 in Restore mode, the next screen generated is a: The following files are available for download from your iPhone.

with no restore button in site?

I have recently made a backup of my collection from Movies.
The zip file was created and I saved it on my computer via wi-fi.
This file was quite large (more than 200Mo) which is only natural considering the number of films...

But apparently, the zip file remains on the iphone afterwards and I don't know how to remove it to save some space.
Is there a way to do so, because my iphone is rather full ?
